How to peel Garlic? With this clever hack, you can peel an entire head quickly and easily. It works best with multiple cloves of Garlic. You’ll also need a large bowl and a plate to fit over the top. A mason jar that is extra large or two bowls that fit together will also work.
Garlic has become one of my favorite ingredients. It is an essential flavor in many of my favorite recipes, like Garlic-Roasted Potatoes or Sauteed mushrooms with Garlic. But peeling the papery, thin skin from multiple cloves can be a hassle.
You can peel three cloves or more – or even an entire head – by following the instructions below. After you master this hack, you can cut Garlic and freeze garlic, so you always have it on hand. This is especially important if you plan to make Garlic Sauce. You can tell that we love Garlic at my house. !
How to Pick Garlic
First, choose the best Garlic in the store. Do not buy bulbs that are soft, shriveled, or show brown spots. Look for fat bulbs that have dry skin. Store garlic at home in an open container in a cool, dark place (like a wire mesh basket or empty bowl).
Keep Garlic away from any produce or food which may absorb its smell. I placed mine in the basket with onions. Never refrigerate the whole head of Garlic. The authorities won’t stay as fresh if you do.
How to Peel Garlic Fast
- Start by pressing down with your palm on the garlic bulb to separate the cloves and the root. Use two hands for more significant force.
- Place the garlic cloves, still unpeeled, in a large container with a lid or a hard-sided bowl. The container should be larger than the amount of Garlic.
- Then, place a plate or a bowl (a little smaller) upside-down on top of your bowl. Hold the two tightly together and shake vigorously between 20-30 seconds. Music can help.
- Ta-da! Now you can take a closer look at your peeled Garlic. The skins should have fallen off or been hanging loosely at this stage. If not, continue to shake.
- Remove any remaining garlic peel. The peels should quickly come off.
