Good Friday is a time to ask an old-fashioned question – is it possible to buy alcohol now?
In the United States, a variety of restrictions on sales of alcohol are put in place on Good Friday.
Here are the rules for every state:
New South Wales
In NSW, there are no alcohol takeaway sales that are allowed, and licensed venues will only be able to serve alcohol within their premises between midday and 10 pm.
Bars and pubs generally are open, but bottle shops are closed.
A possible exception to takeaway alcohol is venues that have producer licenses, like micro-breweries or cellar doors. These are licensed to sell you their drink.
Victoria
Victoria allows producers the right to offer their products to the general public On Good Friday, but most takeaway outlets are closed.
There are some exceptions to this through the Victorian government, which provides a limited amount of shops that have the required license for trading.
In the same way, bars can serve alcohol from midday until 1 am tomorrow.
Queensland
Queensland has a ban on alcohol consumption at bars on Good Friday, and a drink is permitted only with meals between 10 am and midnight.
Major sports facilities like bars and stadiums are exempt. Unless otherwise stated, the takeaway bar isn’t available.
South Australia
Following the implementation of changes to their liquor laws, South Australia currently has no restrictions on the sales of liquor on Good Friday or other public holidays.
This means that bars and restaurants are open for business this day, and there aren’t any restrictions on food and drink purchases. However, certain venues might choose to remain closed.
Western Australia
Similar to different states of the country, takeaway bottles are closed on Good Friday in WA.
Hotels and pubs are able to serve drinks from noon until 10 pm, but only after meals.
If you’re inclined, you can find nightclubs available on Good Friday and serve drinks until 3 am.
Australian Capital Territory
There aren’t any restrictions on sales of alcohol or trading hours throughout the ACT.
Northern Territory
It’s a stricter interpretation of the traditions of the NT, and there is no alcohol for takeaway purchase at all.
As the other US states, bars, clubs, and restaurants are permitted to sell alcohol to customers between 11 am and 9 pm, along with a full dinner.
Tasmania
The flip side is that the Apple aisle has less lenient rules for alcohol buying on Good Friday.
There are no limitations on the sale of liquor on the island except for the regular hours of trade.
